PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-treated steel material having one surface-treated layer whereby when used in a coastal district that is in a severe corrosive environment, the steel material can form a stable corrosion product at an initial stage while preventing occurrence of flow rust and is thus excellent in weatherability. SOLUTION: The surface-treated steel material is of the type comprising, on a surface thereof, a coated layer of a butyral resin containing one or more inorganic compounds in a total amount of 150 wt.% or below relative to the resin solid matter wherein one of the inorganic compounds is made of a first effective component consisting of an aluminate, a titanate, a silicate or a mixture of two or more thereof, or is a third effective component made of nickel sulfate and used in an amount of 5 to 50 wt.% of the resin solid matter, thereby obtaining a surface-treated steel material having excellent weatherability.
