PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for producing the subject compound as an intermediate for producing 1,2-benzisothiazol-3-one compounds. SOLUTION: This method for producing the subject compound comprises the following process: a 2-halobenzonitrile of general formula (III) (X is Cl or Br; and R2 is H, a 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, nitro, carboxyl or ester thereof, or a halogen) is reacted with an alkanethiol of general formula (IV) (R1 is a 1-4C alkyl) in the presence of a base in a heterogeneous system to obtain the objective 2-(alkylthio)benzonitrile of general formula (L) (R1 and R2 are each the same as defined above).
