PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the drive load of a plurality of carrying means constituting a paper feeder, solve the delay time of startup so as to be conformable to high-speed processing, and surely perform a stop control to a waiting position even in a sheet carrying in the speed change of the carrying means. SOLUTION: This paper feeder comprises a sheet placing part for placing sheets to be fed, a carrying line for carrying a sheet from the paper placing part, a delivering means for delivering the sheet in the sheet placing part and a plurality of carrying means arranged along the carrying line to impart a carrying force to the sheet, the delivering means and the carrying means being connected to a drive source through a drive transmitting means for controlling the ON/OFF of driving force to each means, and a control means for drive- controlling, relative to the means in a position necessary for carrying of fed papers of the delivering means and the carrying means, the drive transmitting means (e.g. electromagnetic clutch) of the corresponding means.
