PURPOSE: Provided is a smoking composition which generates main-stream smoke having good taste and side-stream smoke having a palliated aroma under smoking conditions by using a flavor-releasing component having low mobility and/or volatility at ambient temperature. CONSTITUTION: The smoking composition comprises an admixture of a combustible filler formed of natural tobacco, reconstituted tobacco or a tobacco substitute, and 0.0001 to 5 wt% of a flavor-releasing additive, based on the total weight of filler. The flavor-releasing additive is a beta-hydroxycarboxylic acid compound represented by the formula, wherein R1 is a C4-C7 alkyl substituent, R2 is a C1-C4 alkyl substituent, and R3 is hydrogen or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal atom.
