Pyridoxylated, polymerized hemoglobin solution and method and apparatus for its preparation

A method and apparatus for preparing red blood cell substitute products comprising an essentially tetramer-free, substantially stroma-free, pyridoxylated, polymerized haemoglobin wherein the haemoglobin comprises about 16% of haemoglobin polymer with a molecular weight of about 128 kD, about 26% of haemoglobin polymer with a molecular weight of about 192 kD, and about 58% of haemoglobin polymer with a molecular weight of about 256 kD. Also disclosed is an essentially tetramer-free, substantially stroma-free, pyridoxylated, polymerized haemoglobin product capable of being infused into human patients in an amount of up to about 5 litres.
