PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a miniaturized scanning optical device by providing a 2nd optical system with a plural-time reflection means having plural reflection surfaces. SOLUTION: A bending mirror is removed and a waveguide optical device 11 including the function of the bending mirror is disposed in space formed by the projecting part of a polygon mirror scanner motor 5 and an optical box 9 on a reverse side to a side where optical parts are disposed with respect to the space of the mount reference surface of the optical box 9. After a laser beam transmitted through an fθlens 7 is made incident on the device 11, it is reflected plural times on the surface of the device 11, emitted from the device 11 and formed into an image on the surface 10 of a photoreceptor drum. The luminous flux emitted from the device 11 scans a longer span on a surface to be scanned in a scanning direction than for the case that the plural-time reflection means does not exist. Therefore, the surface to be scanned is disposed at a short distance by inserting the device 11 while the same scanning span is obtained.
