PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To permit continued work without emitting refrigerant into the atmosphere and without employing vacuum pump by a method wherein a switching means, capable of being vented to the atmosphere, is arranged between the compressor of an outdoor machine and a refrigerant pipeline, being connected to a heat exchanger. SOLUTION: A switching valve 4, capable of releasing refrigerant into atmosphere, is arranged between the compressor 3 of an outdoor machine 2 and a heat exchanger 5. Upon connecting work between an indoor machine 1 and the outdoor machine 2, the compressor 3 is operated at first to move the refrigerant, staying in the compressor 3 or a refrigerant pipeline for connecting the compressor 3, to the side of the heat exchanger 5. The switching valve 4 is switched to the atmosphere is vent side during operation and the compressor 3 is stopped. The refrigerant is moved to the side of the heat exchanger 5 and is sealed by the switching valve 4. Next, the indoor machine 1 is connected to the outdoor machine 2. In this case, an opening and closing valve 8a is opened and another opening and closing valve 8b is closed. The compressor 3 is operated to discharge air in the indoor machine 1 and obtain a vacuum condition and, thereafter, the switching valve 4 is switched to the side of the heat exchanger 5, then, the compressor 3 is stopped. Finally, the opening and closing valve 8b is opened and the refrigerant is allowed to flow into the indoor machine 1.
