PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the adhesion between a lubricant and a protection film while keeping the lubricating effect for a long period of time by holding the lubricant containing the ester of a perfluoropolyether having hydroxyl groups at both ends and a long chain carboxylic acid and a saturated aliphatic acid on the outermost layer of the protection film which is formed on the magnetic layer formed on a nonmagnetic support and the surface of which is top-coated with an aromatic carboxylic acid. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium has a lubricant containing an ester shown by formula I of a perfluoropolyether and a long chain carboxylic acid and a saturated aliphatic acid shown by formula II. In the formulae, Rf is a perfluoropolyether chain; R1 is a hydrocarbon or fluorinated hydrocarbon group; RI is an alkyl group. The mixing ratio of the compound of formula I to that of formula II is preferably 10:90-90:10 on weight basis. The aromatic carboxylic acid to be used at the top-coating work is phthalic acid, benzoic acid, salicylic acid or the like. The excellent traveling property and durability can be realized by the carbon protection film formed by the CVD method.
