The unit comprises a first reinforced shell (3) which covers the front part of a standard shoe. In its lower part the shell has a safety sole (5). A second reinforced shell (13) which covers the rear part of the shoe has a safety heel (7) in its lower part. The two shells are quickly assembled by means of flexible straps (8) integral with one shell which are engaged in slots in the other shell.
