PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an unprecedented high density recording system by optimizing the film-thickness and the quantity of residual magnetization of a magnetic layer while matching them with an MR head and conforming the property of the magnetic layer to the characteristics of the MR head. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer 2 coated with a magnetic paint consisting of at least magnetic powder and non-magnetic powder dispersed in a bonding agent. The magnetic layer 2 has 0.8-605 memu/cm2 product Mr.δof the quantity Mr of residual magnetization and film- thicknessδ. The non-magnetic powder has Mohs' hardness of 1-8 and is included by 20-80 vol.% of the total volume of the magnetic powder and the non-magnetic powder.
