PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the deterioration of a reductone compound-containing developer or developing solution by air oxidation, to stabilize the developer or developing solution and to obtain a safe developer or developing solution containing no dihydroxybenzene developing agent and less liable to affect the environment by incorporating catechin as a stabilizer to the reductone compound-containing developer or developing solution. SOLUTION: Catechin as a stabilizer is added to a reductone compound- containing developer or developing solution by 5-40 wt.% of the amount of the reductone compound. The reductone compound is ascorbic acid and/or isoascorbic acid or their salts. The catechin is 3,5,7,3',4'-pentahydroxyflavan or its salts. The salts are alkali addition salts such as sodium salt, potassium salt, magnesium salt, calcium salt, barium salt, aluminum salt and ammonium salt.
