MATERIAL WITH BUILT-IN OPTICAL-FIBER SENSOR AND ITS MANUFACTURE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To build an optical-fiber sensor into a material by use of a simpler means. SOLUTION: An optical fiber 1 with a preliminary crack imparted to its surface by a cut N is embedded into a matrix material 2 and joined to the matrix material, after which the material is stressed so that the part of the optical fiber where the preliminary crack is formed is ruptured approximately perpendicular to an optical axis in such a manner as to form a flat cross section, so as to form on-site the sensor part of a light interference type sensor in the material.
