PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce retrieval time as retrieval processing is repeated and also the use resources of an internal storage device. SOLUTION: This symbol name retrieval system is provided with an input device 1 such as a keyboard, an internal storage device 3 provided with a numeric value and symbol name storing part 31 storing an optional numeric value and the information of a symbol name corresponding to it, an external storage device 4 provided with an article name and symbol name storing part 41 storing an input article name which is a character string and the information of a symbol name corresponding to it, an output device 5 such as a display device and a printer, and a data processor 2 having an article name numeric means 21 which converts the input article name being the character string from the device 1 into a numeric value, a 1st retrieving means 22, which collates the numeric value in the means 21 with the numeric value in the part 31 and a 2nd retrieving means 23 which collates the input article name with an article name in the part 41.
