PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform appropriate communication by acquiring the function of the opposite facsimile communication side and notifying an operator of the function. SOLUTION: This machine makes a call to the other party when an original is set, the telephone number of the other party is inputted and a transmission mode such as linear density is set and inputted in the mode of transmission. When the line is connected, the other party transmits a CED signal, DIS signal, CSI signal, NSF (CSI) signal and NSF (S) signal which notify the calling side, that the self-device is a facsimile machine and of the function and maker name of the receiving side. The machine acquires and recognizes the function and maker name of the other party from the signals and stores the function and manufacture name in the FAX information storing part of the other party while allowing them to correspond to the telephone number of the other party. The machine outputs and displays the function and the manufacture name of the other party on a displaying part to allow an operator to know the function of the other party. Next, the machine transmits the image information of the original by facsimile in a normal facsimile communication procedure.
