<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkaline storage battery including a hydrogen storage alloy active and excellent in anti-corrosiveness, thereby having a high-rate discharging characteristics, cyclic characteristics, and gas absorbing performance. SOLUTION: The alkaline storage battery uses a negative electrode active material consisting of a hydrogen storage alloy with a porous surface metal layer whereon further a yttrium compound layer is provided. Provision of this porous metal layer increases the surface area of hydrogen storage alloy, while the metal layer such as nickel, cobalt, aluminum, etc., activates the surface of the hydrogen storage alloy. Provision of the yttrium compound layer enhances the anti-corrosiveness of the hydrogen storage alloy. Thereby the resultant alkaline storage battery with the hydrogen storage alloy has an enhanced gas absorbing performance and also enhanced cyclic characteristics and high-rate discharging characteristics.</p> |
