PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a magnetic head to float low by laminating at least a nonmagnetic base layer, a magnetic layer, a protection film, and a liquid lubricant layer in order on a nonmagnetic base and setting the radius and waving in the circumferential direction of the top surface of the magnetic recording medium equal to or below specific values respectively. SOLUTION: A waving component of the top surface of the magnetic recording medium 1 affects the flotation quantity of the magnetic head. The magnetic recording medium 1 is constituted by laminating the nonmagnetic base substrate 2, nonmagnetic base layer 3, magnetic layer 4, protection film, and liquid lubricant layer 6 in order. The waving is found from a sectional curve appearing in a cut when a measurement surface 7 is cut with a plane perpendicular to the measurement surface 7 by cutting off roughness components, e.g. a high frequency component and a low frequency components such as measurement noise. As the waving increases, the flotation quantity and flotation quantity variation increase. Then when center line mean roughness Ra is 5Å, the waving is suppressed to <=15Åto keep the flotation quantity to <=15.24 nm and the flotation quantity variation to <=7.62 nm.
