PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fluorescent particle image pickup device for properly picking up fluorescent particles by reducing the influence of background light. SOLUTION: A container 3 for picking up an image, that accommodates fluorescent particles stained by a fluorescent coloring matter, while accumulating them at the bottom is provided. When a substance with high transmittance of excitation light, such as a platelet formulation or a diluted erythrocyte is in a vessel, a mirror 20 is disconnected from an optical path 20, and excitation light is applied to only an area near the bottom of the container from a side surface. Even if the fluorescent coloring matter exists in solution in the container, its change to harmful light can be prevented. For those having a low transmittance of excitation light, such as the light-connection erythrocyte formulation, the mirror 20 is inserted into the optical path for applying light to the bottom of the container from the side of the bottom surface. In this case, since the transmittance is low, the excitation light reaches only the area near the bottom, and almost no fluorescence as background light is generated. Even if the transmittance of the excitation light differs, since lighting can be selected according to this, thus accurately counting the number of fluorescent particles.
