PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having excellent dispersibility of carbon black, excellent surface characteristics, good electromagnetic transducing characteristics and excellent durability. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer via a nonmagnetic layer containing at least a carbon black as a pigment on a nonmagnetic base. In such a case, the carbon of the carbon black is an acidic carbon of a pH of <6 and the binder used for the nonmagnetic layer is a radiation curing type binder and contains at least a polyurethane resin having at least a basic polar group.
