摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a simple and inexpensive sensor and method for measuring magnesium content of molten cast iron which can be used even when the magnesium content of the objective molten cast iron is very low. SOLUTION: The content of fused magnesium implies an important factor in the manufacture of a cast iron alloy having a metallic structure containing spheroidal graphite or vermicular graphite. A sensor 1 for finding the magnesium content of molten cast iron is proposed. The sensor 1 is constituted of a chemically inactive base material 2 and a mixture 3 composed of a metal oxide and sulfur and applied to the material 2. The mixture 3 irreversibly reacts to the fused magnesium contained in the molten cast iron as the function of the content of the fused magnesium and, in addition, changes its color in the course of the reaction. The color change is analyzed by using computer software for digital picture processing.
