PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the contrast of an image to be reproduced considerably by supplying an image signal from an image driving part, converting an inputted image signal into an optical image signal and adjusting projected quantity of light according to the brightness of a corresponding image. SOLUTION: When an ABL control signal to be applied is at a high level, a contrast controlling part 21 applies a contrast control signal of a low level which is in inverse proportion to it to a contrast control plate 22. The cell of the plate 22 is adjusted to a closed state as much as a value corresponding to the contrast control signal of a low level in accordance with it. Then, the contrast is improved largely by appropriately interrupting light that makes the entire screen bright on an LCD panel 15 by the ABL control signal. When the ABL control signal to be applied is at a low level, the part 21 conversely applies a contrast control signal of a high level which is inverse proportion to it to the plate 22.
