Hydrogel microencapsulated vaccines containing antigens

Provided are vaccine compositions comprising hydrogel microparticles formed of one or more biocompatible polymers encapsulating an amount of an antigen effective to elicit an immunogenic response, wherein the microparticles have a diameter of 200 microns or less. Suitable polymers are selected from polymers and salts thereof that can be crosslinked by physical crosslinking, convalent crosslinking or ionic crosslinking to for a hydrogel. The compositions can be used to deliver the antigen to mucosal surfaces.
