PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device in which black characters can be displayed in a brilliant fluorescent color background and to make an electronic appliance such ad a cellular phone characteristic and fashionable. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device is equipped with a liquid crystal cell 103 having a liquid crystal layer held between a pair of substrates and a light- transmitting cover 102 disposed on the observer's side of the liquid crystal cell 103. A florescent material is mixed into the light-transmitting cover 102. The fluorescent material is mixed in such a manner that the minimum transmittance of the light-transmitting cover 102 containing the fluorescent material is 50-60% in the visible ray region (380 nm to 780 nm).
