PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an enhanced visual interface for a user in a management level of a network among hierarchical networks such as an SDH or SONET network or of a sub network management level. SOLUTION: A virtual display unit exhibits a map denoting a network element and connection between network elements so as to display network information for a user connected to a network of hierarchical communication networks or to a sub network manger. A plurality of views is served and a means to select a desired one of a plurality of the views is provided. A plurality of the views includes not only a usual physical view where all network elements (multiplexer and regenerator) and optical fiber links between them are indicated out also one or two or more views indicating connection in each virtual container level (e.g. VC-4, VC-12).
