PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a stable focus jumping to be performed from a present recording layer to a specified recording layer. SOLUTION: The device is provided with an objective lens 2 for forming a spot on the optional recording layer of the optical disk 1 having the plural recording layers, a focus error detecting means 6 for detecting a focus error signal based on reflected light from the spot to produce a focus error control signal, a driving means 3 for driving the objective lens based on the focus error control signal, a hold means 12 for holding the focus error control signal, and an acceleration/deceleration pulse generating means 14 to generate and acceleration/deceleration pulse for focus jumping from the 1st recording layer of the optical disk to the 2nd recording layer. Then, the driving means is driven based on the sum of outputs of the hold means 12 and the acceleration/ deceleration pulse generating means 14 when an instruction for focus jumping is received, then the timings for impressing the acceleration pulse and deceleration pulse are decided based on the focus error signal in the focus jumping operation.
