Smokeless method and article utilizing catalytic heat source for controlling products of combustion

[A smoking article (10) provides products of combustion which are used to form flavourable aerosol gases to be delivered to a smoker's mouth while controlling the composition of such gases of combustion. Hot gases are generated in a catalytic section (17) in which fuel and air from the fuel storage and air mixing section (16) is combust aided by a honeycomb catalytically coated surface (25) including alumina and a cerium compound. A flavourant section (12) is downstream of fuel burning catalytic section (17) and the article terminates in a filtered mouthpiece section (11). The fuel storage and air mixing section includes a fuel absorbent reservoir (22) comprising a wick material for storing liquid fuel (preferably ethanol). The design of the smoking article is such it produces about 6 to 12 puffs and to be both smokeless and flameless. After the fuel in the reservoir has been consumed, the article will extinguish itself.
