An image pickup system in which color can be precisely corrected in order to realize invariability of color through simple calibration while decreasing the area of a reference image part. The image pickup system comprises a camera (2) having a lens (41), an image pickup device (31), and a reflecting surface (61) and picking up a main scene on the image pickup device. Reference signal values (rn, gn, bn) are determined by averaging the intensities of the reflected lights of a reference scene received by the image pickup device from the respective color channels of a plurality of pixel parts. The reference signal values represent the light source color and a main image is corrected using the reference signal values. Correction is performed through digital or analog electrical processing by an image processor (7) or through optical processing using a complementary color filter disposed in front of the image pickup device (31).
