Disclosed is a method for detecting knocking in an internal combustion engine. According to the inventive method, the output signal of at least one knocking sensor associated with said internal combustion engine is evaluated with the aid of a subsequent evaluation device. Knocking is detected when the conditioned output signal of the knocking sensor exceeds a given reference level. Calculation of the reference level correction input signal is carried out according to whether the internal combustion engine is in a dynamic operational state or not. Measuring values which are determined when knocking is known are also used to calculate the reference level during a dynamic state.
