A hydrocarbon solvent characterized by comprising fractions which are obtained by reacting styrene and cumene in the presence of an acid catalyst and have a 1-phenyl-1-(p-isopropylphenyl)ethane content of 85 wt.% or higher and a total styrene dimer content of 5 wt.% or lower. The hydrocarbon solvent is inexpensive and excellent in dye solubility, color-developing rate, etc., and is satisfactorily odorless.
