The system has a retention device (10,11) that exerts a restraining force on an occupant when activated, a detector for detecting the position of the occupant and a control circuit (5-8) that decides about activating the retention device using information provided by the detector. The detector has a measurement arrangement (1) for measuring the extraction length of a safety belt (1). An Independent claim is also included for a method of controlling an occupant retention system for a motor vehicle.
