An apparatus for measuring contact angle, surface tensions, and surface energy uses shadows to determine a baseline between a droplet (1) and a specimen surface (2). This allows for measurements to accurately be made when recording data from an angle. The apparatus uses a pre-aligned, fixed optical system. Light and shadows are used to obtain a precise measurement of the contact angle between the drop (1) and the surface (2). Two markers determine the base line of the droplet. Each marker casts a shadow, just like the drop, due to back lighting. With two distinct illumination levels in the marker image, one from the shadow and one from the overhead controllable lamps, the image processing algorithm can find the boundary between illumination levels. The algorithm can then accurately determine the base line of the droplet and the contact angle.
