Neighborhood of pixel data is assessed to differentiate, for middle pixel of each neighborhood, an assigned edge value and scale parameter for distribution of mid pixel value. Edge value indicates amount of tone change over the neighborhood. Level of change of tone indicates edge intensity. Middle pixel value is scaled to higher level of resolution. Image processing pipeline processes pixel of image on through-flow basis to improve final image output by copier. Copier memory (22) contains temporary memory, input image data buffer for data received from scanner (12). Image processing pipeline procedure (28) contains procedures for improvement of image. The unpacking procedure (30) where input data is parsed into fixed number of bits per pixel, noise filter (32) to remove half-tone noise, Moire pattern and false edge detection, edge assessment (34), focus filter (36), tone regulation (38), scaling/half tone (40). Image passes through image processing pipeline processes and is then compressed and stored in raster image buffer (50) or sent directly to print unit (20).
