An exhaust gas cleaner of simple construction, capable of effectively removing smoke from exhaust gases from diesel automobiles, such as trucks and buses, and an exhaust gas cleaner capable of effectively removing CO, NOx and SOx in addition to hydrocarbons from the above-mentioned exhaust gases. The exhaust gas cleaner comprises an exhaust gas cleaning tank containing therein an exhaust gas cleaning liquid selected from lubricating oils and animal and vegetable oils, an exhaust gas introducing flow channel formed in the bottom of the exhaust gas cleaning tank, an exhaust gas lead-out flow channel by which the exhaust gases flowing through the exhaust gas cleaning liquid is led out of the exhaust gas cleaning tank. There is also provided an exhaust gas cleaner which has a second exhaust gas cleaning tank containing an NOx removing liquid, such as water or alkaline solution, in addition to a first exhaust gas cleaning tank similar to the above-mentioned exhaust gas cleaning tank.
