PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new (S)-2-halogeno-3-hydroxypropionic acid (alkyl ester) expected to find use as an intermediate for synthesizing various kinds of opti cally active medicines and agrochemicals. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I (R is H, a 1-6C alkyl; X is a halogen; *expresses an asymmetric carbon atom). For example, (S)-2-chloro-3- hydroxypropionic acid methyl ester. The compound of formula I is obtained by treating a racemic halogen-containing carboxylic acid ester of formula II with the cultured product, cells or treated cells of a microorganism (e.g. a microorganism belonging to the genus Pseudomonas, a microorganism belonging to the genus Escherichia, or a genetically treated microorganism transformed with a gene coding an enzyme for asymmetrically hydrolyzing an ester bond) having an ability to asymmetrically hydrolyze the ester bond. |
