PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new naphthalene compound having high spontaneous polarization and low viscosity, excellent in high speed response, and useful as a component for liquid crystal compositions used for ferroelectric liquid crystal elements. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I [R1 is a halogen-substituted linear 1-24C alkyl; R2 is a (branched) 1-24C alkyl; A is (substituted) (non)aromatic carbon homocyclic group or heterocyclic group; X is -OCH2 -,-OC(=O)-; Y is a single bond, an ether bond, an ester bond; C* is an asymmetric carbon]. For example, 2-(6- [4-(dodecyloxy)phenyl]carbonyloxy}naphthalen-2-yl)propionic acid 3-(perfluorooctyl)propyl ester. The compound of formula I is obtain by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of the formula: R2 -Y-A-CH2 Br or R2 -Y-A-COCl. |
