The present invention relates to paper and board machines, in particular, the present invention relates to a method and an arrangement for control of rolls, in particular for controlling relieving, the deflection line of rolls, the linear load in a nip between rolls and/or quick-opening of a set of rolls in a calender, in particular in a soft calender, a multi-roll calender, such as a supercalender, and/or in an on- or off-line calender. In accordance with the basic idea of the invention, the impact of the weight of a roll (3) is relieved partly or totally, the deflection line of the roll is controlled, and/or the linear load of a nip between rolls is controlled by means of long-stroke slide bearing elements (i.e. slide shoes), which are integrated into a slide bearing of an axle (5) of the roll (3), by regulating the loading of at least slide elements (11v) located in an upper and/or a lower position perpendicularly and/or diagonally, whereby the force of gravity can be compensated for totally or partly, when desired.
