The invention relates to a method for determining the fertility of mammals, especially of humans, wherein a body fluid or organ fluid is drawn from a mammal, after which the leptin content in this body fluid or organ fluid is determined, and the established leptin content is compared to a reference value for determining fertility. The invention also relates to the use of leptin for determining the fertility of mammals and to a kit for carrying ou t this method.
