A method for control of the extinction angle ( gamma ) of a line-commutated converter (1) in dependence on a minimum reference value ( gamma min) for the extinction angle, and wherein the converter has a plurality of valves, each one of these having at least one semiconductor element capable of being fired, comprises means (74-76) for generating firing control pulses (FCP) for a commutating valve in dependence on the minimum reference value of the extinction angle according to a given criterion (Amin) for commutation of a direct current (ID) through the converter. The device comprises means (81-87, 90) for continuously forming an operating value (TQE) of recovery time (tq) for the semiconductor element of a decommutating valve, and means (91-92) for forming the minimum reference value of the extinction angle in dependence on said operating value.
