Method to control continuous gearing, especially on motor vehicle

The method involves a vehicle which is driven by an internal combustion engine, and has gearings which are determined by a control unit. The driver of the vehicle can use an operating element to select a gear, in terms of one which is higher or lower than the current gear ratio. A desired gear can be selected by operating the element, depending on the mode of operation. The gear ratio may be adjusted by the driver by moving the element out of its mainly linear operating path.
