Apparatus and method for the electronic capture of moving images wherein a moving image is sampled at a first spatial resolution and temporal frequency to produce a digital video output signal (308). It is also sampled at a second, lower spatial resolution and higher temporal frequency and this second signal is fed into a motion estimator (314) which also receives a frame delayed input (316). Motion vectors are then derived by the motion estimator (314) and are made available to an MPEG-2 (310) encoder. As the temporal information received from the additional sensor is over sampled, the motion vectors are of substantially higher accuracy. In one embodiment of the invention, an image sensor arrangement (302) samples a moving image at said first spatial resolution and frequency, and, an additional sensor (304) samples said moving image at said second spatial resolution and frequency. |
