Method and apparatus for driving a discharge lamp

The discharge lamp operating system supplies the lamp with a frequency modulated AC signal with a frequency which is varied over a given frequency range during the lamp operation. The AC frequencies providing stable operation of the lamp are determined during a test phase, with only these frequencies used for frequency modulation of the AC signal during the subsequent operation of the lamp. Pref. the operating frequency is modulated in discrete steps over the operating frequency range.
