Soldering tip (4) and tip mounting (3) of a soldering iron (1) with handle (2) are provided with an axial bore (5) through which a soldering wire can be passed to the end (9) of the tip during a soldering operation for resistance heating to melting point.. Preferably the tip is fitted with a temperature sensor which is connected to a closed-loop control circuit to maintain a constant tip temperature. A feed mechanism may be provided for the wire, which may be fed under control of a trigger on the handle. A seal (8) at the handle end of the mounting is preferably of aramid or carbon fibres.
