PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a zirconia sintered compact excellent in strength and toughness and excellent also in hydrothermal resistance, and to provide a method for producing the zirconia sintered compact by an easy process. SOLUTION: The zirconia sintered compact contains alumina and has 2-5 mol% concentration of yttria and >=97% relative density. The average grain diameter of the alumina and zirconia grains is <=0.5 μm and the number of alumina gains per unit area is <=1,000/mm2. Fine powdery zirconia having 10-20 m2/g BET specified surface area and containing alumina allowed to enter into solid solution in zirconia particles is compacted and fired at 1,200-1,400 deg.C to produce the zirconia sintered compact. |
