PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method whereby a chiral nematic liquid crystal containing few air bubbles and having selective reflection wavelength and half-value width both almost equal to the design value can be produced. SOLUTION: In the step of addition, a chiral material having one asymmetric carbon atom is added in an amount of 5 to 50 wt.% to a nematic liquid crystal. In the first agitation step, the mixture prepared in the above step is agitated at the phase transition temperature TNI or higher but at (TNI+40 deg.C) or lower for 60 min or lower at a revolution speed of 1 rpm or higher in a specified atmosphere (N2, Ar or air). In the second agitation step, the mixture is further agitated at about room temperature for 60 min or lower at a revolution speed of 1 rpm or higher in a specified atmosphere (N2, Ar or air). And, in the defoaming step, the mixture is defoamed by agitating it at TNI or higher but at (TNI+30 deg.C) or lower for 60 min or lower at a revolution speed of 1 rpm or higher under an air pressure of 1 Pa or higher but lower than the atmospheric pressure.
