PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a coating composition which can give a high-chroma coated article excellent in terms of design by adding a fluorescent whitening agent to a coating composition containing a coating-film-forming component and a colored pigment component. SOLUTION: Preferably, the hue H in the Munsell hue circle of a coating film obtained from a coating composition containing a coating-film-forming component and a colored pigment component is preferably in a hue range from 5B as the center to 10Gy in the green direction and to 10P in the purple direction. A benzoxazolylthiophene derivative represented by formula I (wherein R is 1-5C alkyl; and n is 1 or 2) is suitable as the fluorescent whitening agent, an example being 2,5-bis(5-tert-butyl-2-benzoxazolyl)thiophene (CAS registered number 7128-64-5) represented by formula II. Other examples of a usable fluorescent whitening agent are coumarin-, naphthalimide-, triazine-, distyrylbenzene-, distyrylbiphenyl-, and vinylstilbene-based ones.
