PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine to reliably reduce the generation of NOx and particulate in exhaust gas discharged from a diesel engine throughout a range from a low load to a high load and reduce fuel consumption. SOLUTION: In a diesel engine comprising turbochargers 6 and 7, an intercooler 4, a particulate removing device 10, and an EGR cooler 12, an EGR rate of intake air, the injection timing of an injection nozzle 16, and an air excess rate λ to fuel are controlled by an operation load. At a middle load, low temperature combustion at a low air excess rate is effected at a high EGR rate and at a high load, normal EGR operation is carried out. |
