An improved electric clutch for driving refrigeration compressors and the like includes an annular ferromagnetic annular armature that is connecte d with a drive shaft via the outer peripheral portion of an annular resilient disk the inner peripheral portion of which is connected with a rotor that in turn is connected with the drive shaft. The armature is normally biased in the direction of the rotor toward an inactive de-energized position in spaced relation relative to an annular driven member that is connected with the driven shaft. A stationary electromagnetic coil is mounted on the opposite side of the driven member from the armature, so that when the coil is energized, the armature is attracted toward an active energized position in frictional engagement with the driven member, thereby to cause the driven shaft to be driven by the drive shaft.
