PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To a method for producing hexafluoroacetone or its hydrate as an effective method for using perfluoro(2-methyl-1,2-epoxypropyl) ether being a by-product in producing hexafluoroacetone by oxidizing heptafluoroisobutenyl ether with ozone. SOLUTION: This method for producing hexefluoroacetone or its hydrate comprises thermally decomposing a perfluoro(2-methyl-1,2-epoxypropyl) ether of the formula (R is a lower alkyl group, an aryl group or a benzyl group). The thermal decomposition of perfluoro(2-methyl-1,2-epoxypropyl) ether is preferably carried out at 100-600 deg.C.
