PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject polymer excellent in chelating capacity, having biodegradability and useful as a builder for detergents or the like by including a specific structure and keeping its number-average molecular weight in a specific range. SOLUTION: This polymer contains (A) 30 to 99 mol%, preferably 40 to 80 mol%, of a repeating unit shown by formula I (X is H, an alkali metal or ammonium), (B) 0 to 69.9 mol%, preferably 20 to 60 mol%, of a repeating unit shown by formula II and (C) 0.1 to 50 mol%, preferably 0.2 to 49%, of total of repeating units shown by formula III, IV and V, and has a number- average molecular weight of 500 to 1,000,000. This polymer is obtained by, e.g. copolymerizing an unsaturated carboxylic acid or its salt (e.g. acrylic acid) with a quinone (e.g. hydroquinone) in the presence of a polymerization initiator (e.g. combination of hydrogen peroxide and ferrous chloride).
