PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a catalyst useful for oxidizing alkane to unsaturated aldehyde or carboxylic acid in a gaseous phase and to obtain a catalyst for converting alkane to unsaturated aldehyde or carboxylic acid. SOLUTION: This catalyst consists of a mixed metal oxide represented by the formula AaMmNnXxOo (wherein (a) is 0.25<a<0.98, (m) is 0.003<m<0.5, (n) is 0.003<n<0.5, (x) is 0.003<x<0.5, (o) depends on an oxide state of other elements, A is selected from Mo, and the like, M is selected from V, and the like, N is selected from Te, and the like, and X is selected from Nb, and the like) and an acid selected from heteropolyacid, almina, zirconia, titania, zeolite and at least one kind of a combination of these acids and the acid is present in an amt. of 0.05-5 wt.% in the catalyst.
