PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lightweight medium raw material for mushroom culture having a high water retention content. SOLUTION: The core of flax obtained by removing bark from a raw wood of flax is sufficiently dried until the water content of the core reaches about 5 wt.%. Then the dried core of flax is ground until its particle diameter reaches about 1-15 mm. A medium raw material for mushroom culture is obtained. The medium raw material for mushroom culture has a porous structure, about 88 wt.% maximum water retention ratio and an extremely high water retention ratio. The medium raw material for mushroom culture has an extremely low specific gravity and facilitates its handling and transportation operation. The flax belongs to a vegetation, is readily decomposed by an enzyme produced by a mushroom mycelium and is precisely absorbed as a nutrient in the mushroom mycelium.
